Step 4 in Defining Your Core Values

Defining Core Values

Welcome back to week four of our six week blog series “Defining Core Values”. We’ve spent the last three weeks giving you tips on how to start this process of identifying the beliefs, behaviors, or traits that represent your ideal company culture and values. The next step takes a bit more thought and purposeful decision making. This is when you synthesize your list.

So far you should have 10 groups of values that are named with symbolic phrases meant to inspire your team. There might be a lot of love for some of these, but this step is all about taking this list of values and figuring out which ones are at your core.

Use the questions below, whether individually or with your herd, to refine the list to 3-5 Core Values:

  • What behaviors/values are critical to your organization?
  • What values are you willing to reinforce and stand by?
  • What values are unique to your organization?

Think about what would compel the right people to want to be a part of your organization. After this step, you should start to feel significant progress is being made. Remember to continually get feedback from key stakeholders to ensure that once this list is final, everyone will embrace it and live the values each day.

Check in next week for Step 5 of Defining Core Values.
