In the fourth and final part of my series discussing 6 scary numbers for your organization’s c-suite (and what to do about them), I want to focus on the last statistic that Gallup concluded from their workplace research. They estimated that 51% of current employed adults in the U.S. say they are searching for new jobs or watching for new job opportunities. That means that over half of your employees are wondering if the grass is greener somewhere else. If your employees aren’t content or fulfilled at their current job, it leads me to wonder what is it that’s pushing them to look for better opportunities?
Are the right people in the right seats? Have you started off on the right foot from the beginning by compelling the right people for your business and repelling the ones that aren’t the best fit? If you aren’t compelling the right people in the first place, then your business is bound to have a higher turnover rate. By having a compelling vision, you’ll attract those people who say things like:
- “I want to be a part of what you’re doing/building.”
- “I love what you’re trying to accomplish in the world.”
- “I really appreciate why you exist and am passionate about your view of the future.”
- “I admire what your company stands for.”
Once you have the right people in the right seats, your goal becomes retaining those employees long-term. They will become a huge asset to the success and growth of your business. I recently wrote a dedicated blog post discussing 5 tips to help retain employees.
The bottom line is employee turnover is unavoidable. It’s impossible to have 100% retention, but it is possible to have satisfied and content employees that will be with your business long-term. When they’ve caught your vision and are on-board with what you are building, new opportunities or jobs elsewhere won’t be a temptation because they won’t be looking. Instead,
they will be focused on how they can have more impact and responsibility on your team.
