Growth Mindset: An Introduction

This week I’ve been doing some research on how companies are speaking to their employees and encouraging them to learn and grow. This is a crucial piece of Strengthening Your Herd and engaging your employees. One concept I like is called Growth Mindset. It’s a concept that has been used for some time among exceptional athletes, but it transfers well to any business that wants to Strengthen Their Herd.

The concept is simple and intuitive. All of us have two competing mindsets: Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset. When you’re using a fixed mindset, you generally assume that people are born with an innate set of abilities. For example, some of us were born to be great a math, and some of us weren’t. When using a growth mindset, you assume intelligence and talent can be learned and developed. Here’s a great infographic that summarizes both mindsets:

In today’s business landscape, I think it’s increasingly important that leaders approach their Herds and business challenges with a Growth Mindset. A simple way to get into growth mindset when facing challenges is to practice using the word “yet”. To continue the example above, maybe someone isn’t good at math “yet”. Tacking “yet” on to the problems and challenges your organization faces helps your Herd understand that these are short-term problems that can be solved if you’re all willing to collectively learn, grow, and develop.

While the concept of Growth Mindset is intuitive, it’s not always easy to implement within your business. If you need strategies for embracing Growth Mindset with your organization, visit my Strengthen Your Herd page and schedule a free consultation with me right on the page.

What are some other strategies you could implement with Your Herd to help them embrace a Growth Mindset? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below to start a conversation.
